A rising star in the jazz realm, Brianna Thomas is quickly becoming one of the must-hear voices. She's performed at many of the jazz clubs in New York City as a featured vocalist including with Wynton Marsalis. Thomas was awarded "High School Jazz Vocalist of the Year" by Down Beat magazine. Thomas is also the youngest person ever to be inducted into Peoria Illinois' African-American Hall of Fame (1996). In 2009, she won New York's Jazzmobile Vocal Competition. Find out why Will Friedwald of the Wall Street Journal said "she may well be the best young straight-ahead jazz singer of her generation."

S1, E6 : Brandee Younger (Harp) 

BRANDEE YOUNGER for Capsulocity.com:

If it's rare to see a harp nowadays, check out Brandee Younger's music and know that you've at least heard her before. The classically trained harpist from Long Island has played and recorded with some of the top names in music, including John Legend, Common, Drake and Ravi Coltrane. Younger released her debut EP, "Prelude" and in June 2011, the EP was recorded in an analog studio with bassist Dezron Douglas, drummer E.J. Strickland and vocalist Niia. She received her undergraduate degrees in Harp Performance and Music Business at the Hartt School of Music in West Hartford Connecticut. Following the death of Trayvon Martin, Younger recorded a special track called "He Has A Name (Awareness)" (http://brandee.bandcamp.com/), with proceeds going to the NAACP. Her goal is to make the harp "a more relevant force in today's music."

S1, E5 : Emily Braden (Vocals)

Emily Braden, the "big bad beauty" from Boise currently resides in Harlem, mixing it up and performing all around New York City, Idaho and British Columbia. Aside from her solo work, which features a wide array of jazz standards and pop classics, Ms. Braden is also part of a truly unique act, Double Bass, Double Voice, which features her singing with vocalist Nancy Harms and bassist Steve Whipple. Braden also comfortably walks the fine line between jazz and soul. Hitting the streets of NYC in 2009, she immediately made connections and put her time and love of jazz and soul music into her self-released debut album, "Soul Walk." She was also a 2011 finalist in the Jazzmobile Vocalist Competition. In this episode, Braden - a lyricist and composer - gives a fresh take on Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon in the Sky" with Double Bass, Double Voice and gives us just a taste of her original song "Testify."

S1, E4 : Linda Oh (Bass)

LINDA OH, BASS for Capsulocity.com:

One word description for Linda Oh; talent. The Malaysia-born, Australia-raised bassist/composer played the clarinet and bassoon before picking up the bass. She moved to New York and quickly made a name for herself. She won the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award in 2008; received an honorary mention at the 2009 Thelonious Monk competition and won the 2010 Bell Award for Jazz Artist of the Year. This May 22nd, the Manhattan School of Music graduate will release her second album, entitled "Initial Here." Oh, baby!

Sinatra had a point. Once you make it in New York City, you can definitely make it anywhere. Sofija Knezevic hopes to follow in the footsteps of great NYC success stories. In 2011, the Serbian born jazz singer, model and actress arrived in the Big Apple to take a bite out of her dream. At 16, Knezevic was the youngest person to pass the entrance examination for the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria. As a model, she has appeared in several fashion publications including Vogue Italia. Knesevic, 21, is currently working on a Neo-Soul/Jazz influenced album with some of R&B's top producers including the Philly duo of Carvin & Ivan (Ledisi, Justin Timberlake, Musiq Soulchild). Knezevic has toured Europe as a vocalist since she was 7 and continues to do so, while navigating the NYC jazz scene. In this episode, Knezevic performs "God Bless The Child." She also sings "Don't Explain" on a track from "Sofijazz," a film about her life.
